Abstract

The present study was carried out to evaluate insecticidal and antimicrobial activity of fruit extract of
Elaeagnus conferta Roxb. (Elaeagnaceae) and Mimusops elengi L. (Sapotaceae). Insecticidal activity
was evaluated against II and III larvae of Anopheles species. Antibacterial and antifungal activity of
fruit extracts was determined by agar well diffusion and poisoned food technique, respectively. Both
the fruit extracts were effective against larvae of Anopheles species with marked larvicidal activity
being exhibited by extract of E. conferta. Both fruit extracts exhibited antibacterial activity, however,
marked activity was shown by extract of E. conferta. In case of antifungal activity, Curvularia sp. and
Rhizopus sp. were highly susceptible to fruit extract of M. elengi and E. conferta, respectively. In
suitable form, the fruits can be used to prevent mosquito borne diseases, and to treat infectious
diseases.
