Abstract

Roller burnishing carried out on cylindrical components of EN24 grade steel in presence of fine silicon carbide abrasive particles (in the form of a paste) to study the effect on surface roughness. Factorial designs with four parameters viz., burnishing force, speed, feed and the number of passes are used to develop Mathematical models for dry and ‘with-paste’ roller burnishing. The surface roughness tests indicate that the ‘with-paste’ roller burnishing reduced the surface roughness a greater extent as compared with dry roller burnishing. The lowest roughness value noted was 0.1843 µm when roller burnishing was conducted with 35 Kgf, 770 rpm, 0.049mm/rev and three passes of the tool over the workpiece.
